Part P Building Regulations

In May 2003, the Government announced that it would introduce a new Part to the Building Regulations, Part P, which would bring domestic electrical installation work in England and Wales under the legal framework of the Building Regulations.  These new Regulations will come into effect on the 1st January 2005 and states that any electrical installations must be caried out by a competent person.  This is in-line with the competency expected from gas installers and goes far beyond just knowing which colour wires do what.

Competency, in this case, will mean a full, qualified knowledge of electrical installations.  It will mean you have the ability to thoroughly check a circuit for safety and you will be able to issue a minor works certificate as a self certified "competent person".  This will mean that all your test equipment will need to be in good working order and have an up-to-date calibration certificate.

So make sure your test equipment's calibration is up-to-date and avoid the rush by taking action today.
